 How does Roulette work?

Roulette is played with a table, wheel and chips. These can be physical or digital in an electronic game.

Roulette is a game where the player places their bets. You can place as many or few bets that you like. There may be multiple players at a table during live games. It doesn't matter what order the players place their wagers. Each player will have a different colour chip to indicate which player's chips they belong to.

There is a limit to the time you can place your bets. After some time passes - typically around halfway through the spin - the dealer calls "no further bets" to suspend betting. The roulette wheel is spun approximately once every 30-60 second, which gives players around 15-30 seconds for placing their bets. This is because players can't wait for the ball speed to slow down so they can predict the outcome of a spin.

The dealer and the players wait for the ball on the wheel to drop on a number. After the winner number is determined, winning bets will be paid out and the cycle continues. The casino will identify winning bets, so the player doesn’t have to do anything.

A roulette wheel has 37 or 38 numbers. These numbers include the numbers 1-36 inclusive, plus zero and sometimes 00. European roulette is a game where the wheel contains only zero. American roulette is a game with both 0 and 100 on the wheel. While the numbers on the wheel may not be laid out in the order they are intended, the layout is not random. European roulette's first five numbers from 0 to 5 are always 32, 15, 19, 4 and 21. In alternating order, black and red numbers are also laid out.

Roulette Bet Types Explained

Roulette offers a wide range of betting options. There are two kinds of bets: inside and out.

Inside Bets

You can place inside bets by placing chips directly on a number grid. They are:

* Single/straight Up: Any number from the wheel. You can place one or more chips in a single number to bet on a single. If the chips are not all placed within one number, they may count as a different type of bet such a split or corner (see below).

* Split: Any number that is adjacent to another on the table. Split: Place a chip halfway across the two numbers in order to bet on it. You must place your chips halfway across two numbers on the table. Splitting can be done on numbers 1 and 2, but not on 32 and 15, as these numbers are on the European roulette wheel.

* Street: Any combination of three consecutive numbers placed in a straight-line on the table. If you want to place a bet on a street, place your chip on the outside edge of each number. Half of the chip should fit within the number grid, and the rest should be hanging above the edge.

* Corner: Any four numbers located adjacent to each others on the table (e.g. 1, 2, 4, 5). To place a bet on a corner, place your chip directly on top the "cross" that connects the four numbers.

* Six-line : Any six consecutive numbers between two streets on the table. For example, 1-3 and 4-4. Place your chip halfway between the streets you wish to form the six line.

Outside Bets

As the name implies outside bets can be placed by placing chips in named squares other than the main grid of numbers. These are:

* Low (1-18), or High (19-36),: Any number in the selected range.

* Red or black: You can choose any combination.

* Even or Odd: Any number, except 0 and 00, that is the type chosen.

* Dozen bet (13-24, 25-36): Any number within the specified range. A dozen bets are often called "1st 12, 2nd 12, and 3rd 12" on roulette tables.  How to play virtual roulette
