Fun, fast-paced and team-oriented card game where players attempt to make four cards of the same.

This is a fast-paced, fun card game that involves teamwork. Players try to get four of the same.

THE PACK

Standard deck of 52 cards for four players. Two decks are possible when playing with larger groups.

OBJECTS OF THE GAME

Kemps can be described as a card game that is played in pairs. The objective is to score four-of-a-kind and then to use a secret signal with your partner to get them to say "Kemps!"

THE DEAL

You must flip the cards and give each player four cards. Each player may only have four cards in their hand at any one time. Face up, deal four cards to each player at the center of the table.

THE PLAY

First, ensure you have an equal number of people. This is necessary because the game involves two people playing together. You can randomly assign partners. Next, each pair must meet to discuss a secret, subtle signal. This signal should be non-verbal, and not overtly obvious. You might see it as puckering your lips, winking an eye, scratching an ear, or other signs.

After the signal has been given, each pair should be seated in a circle with their faces towards one another. All partners should be facing each other.

The round begins when you say, "Ready to set, go!" Each player has the option to discard one card and then grab any other card from the middle of the table. This is an ongoing game that does not involve structured turns. Players exchange single cards from their hands with any cards that appear on the table. Players cannot hold more than four cards at once.

You (or your partner), aim to obtain four of the same rank, e.g., four 8s, four Queens, etc. If there are no players who want the four cards in the center, the dealer may remove them and deal out four more cards. Once you have four-of the-kind, you can use your secret signal and get your teammate shouting "Kemps!" To show that they have four-of–a-kind, they will need to reveal their hands.

Your partner can shout "Kemps!" if you have four-of–a-kind or vice versa. This will award your team a point and win the round. If you shout "Kemps!" while your teammate doesn't have four (or vice versa), your team will lose one point. If you think your opponent has four-of a kind, you can also yell "Kemps!" to point at them. You win a point if you succeed, but you lose points if your mistake is made. How to Wrongly Pair Your Cards
