 How to Play Rummy

Rummy is one of many card games. The rules for this game are simple and easy to learn for all ages. It's a card game that is popular and suitable for all ages. This card game can be played by two to six players. All you need is a deck or cards.

Players

Two to six players can play rummy.

Deck

Use a standard 52-card deck. The king and the Ace are high (see below "Ace Either High, or Low" for a common variant).

Goal

You want to be the first one to play (also called "meld") all of you cards.

Setup

You will need to flip the deck in order to choose a dealer. The dealer will give cards to the players as following:

Each player receives 10 cards

Seven cards per player for three or more players

Each player receives six cards.

The draw pile is made up of cards that are not dealt. Place the top card in the draw pile face-up and place it next to your draw pile. This card will be the beginning of the discard pile. You should note that the draw pile will become exhausted as you play the game. Once the draw pile is exhausted, all cards are taken. To create a new draw stack, shuffle all cards except the top card in the discard pile.

Gameplay

Players must follow this sequence for each turn

Draw one card either from the top draw pile or top discard pile.

The player may play a "Meld of Cards" (see "Meld of Cards") or add to another player’s meld ("Laying Off") below.

One card must be discarded by the player. Then, he should add it (face up), to the top of his discard pile. The exception to the requirement to discard is that a player must discard one card, adding it (face up) to the top of the discard pile.

NOTE: If a player draws the top card from the discard stack in step one, he cannot discard that card in step three.

Card Meld

A meld of card can be played provided it meets at least one of the following conditions:

Groups (or Books: Three or Four of a Kind

Sequences or Runs: Three or More consecutive cards from the same suit

NOTE: In basic rummy, an ace is always considered a low card. It is not recommended to be played over the king.

Laying Off

A player can play a card or two from his hand that fit a meld already at the table. This is called "laying down." Laying off cards is when they are put on the table in front the player who played them.

EXAMPLE - Player A has played a match that contains three eights. Player B can put an eight in her hand.

EXAMPLE - Player A has played a combination that includes the eighteen, nineeen, and ten of hearts. Player B has the option to take either the seven of heart or the jack or both of them from his hand.

EXAMPLE : Player A has played a combination that includes the three. You can play four or five clubs. Player B has the option to take six or seven clubs from her hands.

Going out

A player "goes to out" when he plays his last card by either melding, laying down, or discarding.

NOTE: Some players may require that the player discards the last card on his hand. A player cannot take his hand out by melding, or laying off. He must discard the last card. Back Gin Cards
